About us
To promote the social, economic, and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals, couples, and families; people affected by HIV/AIDS; people of color; women; and people of low economic status. We urge elected officials to enact and support legislation that accomplishes this goal.

The Lambda Letters Project is a California-wide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, feminist, people of color, and HIV/AIDS advocacy.
We are committed to bringing gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender and intersex persons, women, people of color, and people affected by or living with HIV/AIDS into full participation in American society by working to change systemic and cultural attitudes and law.
We have members in all 40 Senate districts and in 78 of the 80 Assembly districts.
For more information, read our bylaws.
It's simple. Each month we identify legislation or situations relating to each of our concerns:
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex
HIV/AIDS
Women
People of color
We compose one letter for each area of interest and send them to our members, who may simply sign them as written or modify them to reflect their specific concerns or wishes. Letters are returned to Lambda Letters' headquarters for centralized delivery to achieve the greatest impact.
Accompanying the letters is a newsletter explaining the context of the issues and the importance of the letters.
Lambda Letters also has an e-mail alert system that provides information and sample letters on fast-breaking issues that need immediate response to legislators.
Lambda Letters assesses membership fees of $35 per year plus $20 for each additional household member.
$20 per year for students and those with low incomes. Feel free to request a waiver for financial hardship.
To cover our costs, we rely on dues plus contributions from our members and the public. We also produce fundraising events.
Through our newsletters, email alerts and sample letters, we give supportive people a direct, easy, inexpensive and continuous way to express their views on women's, les/bi/gay/trans/intersex, HIV/AIDS, and people of color issues.
We have:
Delivered well over 500,000 letters since our founding in 1989. In 1999 alone, we delivered over 190,000 letters and e-mail messages.
Provided valuable information to the community about legislation that affects our daily lives.
Made an impact on important legislation—helping to advance the good bills and defeat the bad ones.
Helped persuade public officials to serve our communities' needs better.
Yes. Our monthly newsletter provides a periodic legislative update covering the legislation that Lambda Letters tracks.
At the end of the legislative session, we publish a score card listing each state representative and senator with their voting record on each bill tracked by Lambda Letters.
Of course, you can also e-mail us for up-to-date information about your representative or senator.
You can easily become a member or contributor. You are also welcome to volunteer. E-mail , our volunteer coordinator, to find out how.
No. Lambda Letters enjoys a 501(c)4 tax-exempt status, which allows us to lobby for or against legislation. Under IRS rules, contributions to 501(c)4 organizations are not tax-deductible.
However, contributions made to Lambda Letters Foundation are tax-deductible. This 501(c)(3) corporation supports our educational work.
No. Lambda Letters is an independent, nonpartisan, community-based organization. We do cooperate with groups that serve our diverse communities. We are aligned with several organizations, but we are organized as a separate nonprofit corporation in California.
Because we believe it is nobody's business to know who is a member of the Project, we will neither share, lend, nor sell our mailing list to any other group.
Lambda Letters is run a group of committed volunteers who believe strongly in social and political activism—and the power that the electorate has to be heard and make a difference. Check out our staff page to find out more.
